About Us
|
WoodIndustryEd.org was conceived by a diverse
group of industry professionals affiliated with AWFS® (The Association
of Woodworking & Furnishings Suppliers®), as a means to bring together
resources to assist and encourage those in search of woodworking careers and career enhancement
within the woodworking, manufacturing and related industries.
|
The primary feature of the site is the Searchable Database of woodworking schools, education
and training programs offered by both schools and companies. To date, identifying
wood industry education in schools has been difficult because the programs are classified
under broader headings such as Industrial Arts or Vocational and Career Technical
Education; and training programs offered by companies are generally only listed
on their individual web sites. Now you can find them readily through the WoodIndustryEd.org
database.
|
The Resource Links provide visitors with direct contact information for scholarships,
competitions, awards, associations, trade press, a North American calendar of events
and examples of industry/ education partnerships. The database—as well as the resources--are
intended to grow through the addition of new listings by visitors to the site.
|
The goals of WoodIndustryEd.org:
|
- To assist students in finding woodworking and related industry
career prep programs in the schools; to supply information on scholarships and competitions;
and to provide other supportive resource leads
- To identify continuing education and training courses offered at schools and through
companies for industry professionals who wish to enhance their
current skills
- To connect educators to other institutions and programs for networking;
to identify competitions and scholarships for students; and to locate training and
related industry information to enrich their skills
- To aid and inspire industry to locate schools in their region to
find potential employees and to explore mutually beneficial collaborations
- To dispense useful information on woodworking scholarships, competitions and awards; to offer
additional resources such as associations, trade magazines and industry calendar;
and to share inspiring collaborative projects between the industry and education
sectors
|
Phase One of this web site specifically targeted the development of the Searchable
Data Base and the inclusion of the Resource Links. Work will continue and Phase
Two will amplify the site to include some of the following potential areas: teacher
resources, jobs and internships, in-kind donations,
a wood library and chat room.
